Surgery Day

Today was the day I have been dreading since I found out about it.  We headed to Children's Medical Center early this morning to get Makenzie ready for her tonsillectomy.  Her surgery was scheduled for 10:50 and she couldn't eat anything the morning of so she was very hungry.  Luckily the hospital has so many toys and things to keep the kiddos preoccupied.  We got her checked in and moved upstairs to a pre-op room and she got to run around and play while we waited on the "silly juice".

And then she got her "silly juice"....and she was definitely silly!!
OMG she was cracking us up.  In the beginning she was all giggles and smiles and a little bit later she was so drugged she could barely lift her head off the pillow.  They took her back to the OR and Scotty and I ran downstairs to get a drink.  They told us we had about 30-45 minutes.  By the time we came back up and sat down the nurse was coming to get us to tell us they were finished.  It was quick.  The Dr. said everything went great and she was doing so well.  We went back and I could hear her calling for me down the hall, she wasn't crying but almost.  I laid with her and she went back to sleep for a minute and then that was all she slept for the rest of the day.  She said her mouth hurt so she got another dose of pain meds and then we were transferred to a post op room.  Her nurse kept saying how amazing she was doing and how well she looked which made us feel so much better.  She downed a pop sickle and some juice and then laid around and watched cartoons.  About an hour later, everything came back up.  Poor thing.  We changed her and her bed and tried to get her to relax.  She was so restless.  She would want to lay down, and then want someone to hold her, then want to sit in the chair by herself, then want back in the bed.  She was so tired but fighting her sleep.  The nurse gave her another pop sickle and said if she held that down then we could leave.  We kept our fingers crossed the whole time she was eating the pop sickle.  About 30 minutes later we got to get her dressed and packed up to leave.  She got mad about something and started throwing a tantrum and held her breath so long her lips were dark purple and her face went white and she started shaking.  Scared us so bad.  Just as the nurse was getting ready to get the oxygen out she finally took a breath and calmed down.  We got her home and laid in bed.  She ate another pop sickle and had a few sips of water but still wouldn't lay down and sleep.  Koko and Dallas came over to bring her some goodies and she played for a little while.  I made her some mashed potatoes and she ate way more than I thought she would and had some green Jell-O too.  Papa and Bebe came over and she loved on them for awhile.  We gave her a dose of pain meds that pretty much knocked her out.  Bebe got her settled in my bed and then they headed out.  I laid with her for awhile until she fell asleep.  I'm setting my alarm for every 3 hours tonight to alternate her pain meds.  Everything I've been told and read says to stay ahead of the pain.  It will get me ready to wake up with a newborn in a few months too!!  Wish us luck that the night goes smooth.
